Cleanliness is the single most common topic in short-term rental reviews. A consistent turnover process protects your rating, speeds up changeovers and makes it easy to train a cleaner or a co-host.
Before you start: walk through and photograph
- Do a quick walkthrough for damage, lost items or anything that needs a repair or replacement.
- Take timestamped photos so you can resolve disputes.
- Open windows and let the unit air out while you work.
Bedrooms and linens
- Strip all bedding and towels; check mattress protectors and pillows for stains.
- Remake beds with fresh sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers.
- Fold towels consistently and stage a set per guest.
- Check under beds, in closets and in drawers for left-behind items.
- Dust surfaces and vacuum floors, including under the bed.
Laundry is the biggest time sink in a turnover. Having a helper wash, dry and fold linens while someone else cleans can cut changeover time in half; we offer laundry folding as a standalone or add-on service.
Bathrooms
- Disinfect toilet, sink, tub and shower, including grout and fixtures
- Wipe mirrors until streak-free
- Restock toilet paper, soap and shampoo as you offer
- Empty trash and replace liners
- Mop floors last
Kitchen
- Run and unload the dishwasher; check cabinets for stray dishes
- Clean counters, sink, stove top and microwave
- Wipe the refrigerator and discard leftover food
- Restock coffee, dish soap, sponges and paper towels
- Sweep and mop the floor
Living areas and entry
- Fluff pillows and fold throws; check couch cushions
- Dust surfaces, remotes and decor
- Vacuum rugs and upholstery; spot clean spills
- Wipe door handles, light switches and thermostat
- Take out all trash and recycling
Final guest-ready check
- Walk through as a guest, using the same checklist you would use to judge a hotel room.
- Smell the space: it should be fresh and neutral.
- Take photos for your own records and for any future listing updates.
- Confirm the key box, lock code and welcome instructions are ready.
Build a system that scales
Write your checklist down, assign time targets and track supplies in a shared list. If you manage multiple units, a consistent crew that knows each property is worth far more than the cheapest hourly rate. Ask about flexible scheduling and same-day changeovers when comparing providers.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a turnover clean take?
It depends on size and condition: a studio may take an hour or two, a larger home several hours. Consistent checklists and a helper for laundry speed things up.
Should I clean between every guest?
Yes. Guests expect a fresh, sanitized space every time, and review scores reflect it.
